Louis XIV Style Petit Point Needlepoint Pillow
This needlepoint was originally a chair back and has been recently made into a luxurious pillow. Likely done in the mid to late 19th C. in the French Louis XIV style, judging from the materials, foliage style, color palette, costume style and looser, less symmetrically shaped design elements. The color palette is very pleasing, lively, sophisticated and well-balanced in the composition—a nice assortment of fresh greens and blues accented with rich bronzey gold and a deep crimson red, and a neutral silvery grey central background—very characteristic of the Louis XIV needlpoint upholstery style. Although the overall design is basically symmetrical, the mirrored elements have slight variations in shape and placement, giving it a playfully dynamic and spontaneous character, something not found in textiles designed strictly by the grid. The centrally positioned dancing figures are done in petit point and some emroidered stitches in the facial and hand details, and have movement in their gestures and playful expressions on their faces. Pillow is backed with a rich soft gold velvet fabric and finished with a tasseled trim all around with a zipper in back. Pillow and fringe are made from contemporary materials. Filled with a feather pillow form, giving it the feel of an antique pillow. Condition is excellent. Materials of the needlepoint are wool yarn on woven linen canvas fabric. Finished pillow size is 21" x 23".
